Jo Reitze (Mrs de Carteret) is a Fellow of The Victorian Artists Society, Past President of Melbourne Society of Women Painters & Sculptors, and an award-winning artist. Recent prizes include MSWPS Danks Trust and Annie Davison Oliver Awards. She has received over forty awards, numerous commendations, and shortlisting in major shows since the 70s.
Ballarat born, Jo studied at Melbourne State College, majoring in Painting under AW Harding. She Coordinated Art at Canterbury Girls Secondary College for two decades and now teaches at VAS studios.
Her move to Surrey Hills in 1981 awakened her passion for painting gardens while still painting dynamic coastal impressions of Ocean Grove. Recently she has drawn both subjects in pen.
Her joyous paintings, in oils or gouache, are freely executed on location, with lyrical mark-making, vibrant colours, strong tonal contrasts and diverse patterns. They capture the essence of the scenes, celebrating nature’s beauty.
Her early garden paintings were the catalyst for establishing Jo Reitze paints your garden. Since she has immortalized many client’s gardens throughout Victoria. She also painted twenty gardens for SHNC ‘Beyond the Garden Wall’ Project and was Artist in Residence at Cloudehill, where she was filmed for Put Colour in Your Life. Jo has exhibited with VAS since the early 70s. Major exhibitions include ‘The Artist’s Garden’ Whitehorse Artspace 2013 and Sea Air at Geelong Gallery 2009.
Reitze’s work is represented in civic collections in Victoria and private collections in Australia and overseas.
