Don James has worked as a painter and teacher for 40 years, the last 20 at Montsalvat Artists’ Colony in Eltham. He learned his craft from Shirley Bourne and Alan Martin and paints in oils in the tonal realist manner as developed by Max Meldrum.
He has taught at the Victorian Artists Society where he is a Fellow, at the Malvern Artists’ Society and the Woodend Art Group where he is a Life Member.
Has had a number of solo and joint exhibitions at The Victorian Artists Society, Malvern Artists’ Society and Montsalvat as well as some commercial galleries during his career.
Don James s inspired to paint by the way light falls on surfaces, be they still life, flowers, landscapes or the human form. All paintings are painted from life as the conversion of three-dimensional data into two dimensions on a canvas through disciplined observation, forms the basis of the process which is as important as the final product.
