There are four gallery spaces at the VAS, and you can hire one, two or all.
Artists choose our galleries because:
- We are centrally located near the CBD – so we are easy for your exhibition visitors to find us
- Our pricing and facilities are most competitive
- We have a fully functioned kitchen so there is no need to hire expensive equipment
- Paintings look fantastic on our walls
- Lighting is good and the ambience of our old building is welcoming
- We have many visitors to the building over the course of any week
- There is easy access to the building for bringing in artworks.
The exhibition spaces have the potential for quality display of all two dimensional and three dimensional art forms (for example, painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, photography and installations). Performance pieces, literature and recital presentations are also welcomed. There is a platform stage in one of the large galleries aswell as a piano. The gallery has seating for 100 persons.
A flat rate is charged for all galleries (members receive a generous discount). No other commission is charged but all related expenses and arrangements are the hirer’s responsibility. The galleries feature a consistent hanging system throughout.
Named after William Frater O.B.E, this northern gallery is 14.6m x 8.6 m in size. Warm lighting brings out the best in paintings. The lighting is designed to provide best illuminations to the works on the walls.
Named after Stanley Hammond M.B.E, the southern gallery is 14.6m x 8.6 m in size. There is a platform and a grand piano, lectern and P.A. system. Warm lighting brings out the best in paintings. The lighting is designed to provide best illuminations to the works on the walls.
Named after Frederick McCubbin, this gallery encircles the upstairs atrium stairwell. Lovely bright lighting and it is perfect for those artworks that are best shown intimately.
Named after Edwin (Bunny) Cato our downstairs gallery is 5.2m x 10.6 m in size. Its walls are painted in a darker shade that is most complementary to every type of artwork.
Additional costs: security staffing for opening night (if held at night) and one half of the cost to the security during the periods when the exhibition is open on any Saturday, Sunday or public holiday. *The McCubbin Gallery is available for hire only as an adjunct to either the Frater or Hammond Galleries.
